Senior Charge Nurse – Emergency Room

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse – Emergency Room supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing the 24/7 operations of the Emergency Department at SSMC. The role ensures high‑quality, safe and compassionate patient care while managing resources, staffing and budgetary responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care needs in the Emergency Room.
• Coordinate staffing and skill mix with the Nurse Manager to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Monitor staff performance, provide coaching, feedback and guidance during each shift.
• Manage utilization of human resources, consumables and equipment efficiently.
• Collaborate with pharmacy services to meet medication needs of the unit.
• Respond to emergencies according to organizational policies and delegate tasks appropriately.
• Facilitate communication between patients, families and the interdisciplinary health‑care team.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, family meetings and performance‑improvement projects.
• Identify learning needs, mentor new staff and support educational activities.
• Ensure a clean, safe working environment and lead initiatives to improve unit operations.

Required profile

• Demonstrated competence in clinical assessment, care planning and evaluation.
• Experience supporting nurse managers in operational, fiscal and personnel activities.
• Ability to allocate resources, manage budgets and promote shared decision‑making.
• Strong collaboration skills with medical, pharmacy and interdisciplinary partners.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and staff development.
