Senior Charge Nurse – Nursing Clinical Support – Critical Care

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse provides clinical and operational support to the Nurse Manager within a Critical Care unit, ensuring safe, effective and compassionate patient care around the clock. The role involves resource allocation, staff supervision, budget assistance and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to maintain high‑quality services.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care needs in accordance with current standards.
• Coordinate staffing and skill mix with the Nurse Manager to meet patient care load safely.
• Monitor staff performance, provide coaching, feedback and support during shifts.
• Manage utilization of human resources, consumables and equipment efficiently.
• Oversee direct and indirect patient care to achieve optimal outcomes.
• Collaborate with pharmacy services to ensure medication availability.
• Respond to emergencies following organizational policies.
• Provide clinical and administrative guidance to the care team.
• Facilitate communication between patients, families and the interdisciplinary team.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, family meetings and discharge planning.
• Identify operational issues, lead improvement initiatives and ensure a safe environment.
• Support performance improvement projects and interdisciplinary teams.
• Identify learning needs, mentor new staff and coordinate educational activities.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with extensive experience in critical care.
• Demonstrated competence in patient assessment, planning and evaluation.
• Ability to liaise with management to align staffing with patient acuity.
• Strong supervisory skills with a focus on coaching and performance feedback.
• Knowledge of resource management, consumables and equipment usage.
• Effective communication skills for interaction with patients, families and multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to safety, quality improvement and a clean working environment.
