Senior Welding Engineer

About the role

The Senior Welding Engineer improves the Welding discipline at McDermott by applying best practice and knowledge of internal and external issues. The role acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience, sharing conceptual and practical expertise, solving complex problems and influencing customer, operational, project and service activities while ensuring compliance with guidelines and policies.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver welding engineering outputs for development projects and tasks, and provide metallurgical consultancy to operating groups (Fabrication / Marine).
• Develop the Project Welding Execution Plan, defining the scope of weld procedures, qualification schedule, and quantities of electrodes and materials.
• Establish project priorities, review progress, and seek review and approval of all project weld procedures from customers and certifying authorities.
• Work with the Welding Engineering group and department on R&D projects, coordinate with test houses on coupon testing, and select electrodes based on physical, chemical, corrosion and weldability properties.
• Review welding consumable requirements against availability, and guide Welding Engineers and mentor trainees on codes, standards and project requirements.
• Assist in resolving metallurgical, welding and quality problems, and support the development of automatic/mechanized welding systems.
• Manage the welding school facility and review vendor documents for the welding engineering bid stage, including ECA acceptance criteria where applicable.
• Liaise with operations managers, discipline managers, customers, QC/NDT engineers, certifying authorities and agencies such as TWI and DNVGL.

Required profile

• MS in Welding, or a 4-year BS degree (IWE or EWE) in Welding, Metallurgical or Mechanical Engineering.
• 5+ years of directly related welding engineering or metallurgy/materials experience in fabrication or construction.
• Welding inspection qualification preferred; TQM education preferred.
