Backend Engineer - Python

About the role

AppliedAI is an AI technology company based in Abu Dhabi, focused on regulated industries such as healthcare, insurance, government and financial services. Its Opus platform is a Knowledge Work AI system built on supervised automation, where AI handles repetitive, structured tasks while human experts provide oversight. As a Backend Engineer, you will design and develop server-side logic, APIs and backend systems using Python microservices, working closely with frontend developers, product managers and data scientists.

Key responsibilities

• Write clean, documented code and implement unit and integration tests; take part in code reviews and help refactor the backend.
• Work with frontend, DevOps and ML teams to deliver features end-to-end, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment.
• Apply logging and monitoring best practices so that code is observable in production.
• Keep learning backend, infrastructure and DevOps practices, and support junior engineers.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related technical field.
• Experience building backend services with Python, including microservices or distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience with at least one real-time messaging or streaming technology (Kafka, Redis Pub/Sub, RabbitMQ or similar).
• Practical experience with asynchronous task processing via distributed task queues (Celery, RQ or similar).
• REST API development with modern Python frameworks (FastAPI, Flask or similar).
• Some exposure to ETL workflows or data pipelines; Airflow or Prefect is a plus.

Required skills

• Caching strategies and message broker concepts.
• Docker for deploying containerised applications.
• Relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar) and basic query optimisation.
• CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
