Design Lead (Secondary) - Substation Electrical

About the role

The Design Lead (Secondary) defines, reviews and executes secondary engineering activities for substation and power distribution projects. The role requires advanced knowledge of protection and automation systems in substations, coordination with vendors for equipment finalisation, leading a team of engineers and draughtspersons to complete engineering work on time and within budget, and maintaining the quality of engineering deliverables.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver engineering drawings and documents on schedule, aligned with the project schedule
• Obtain spatial requirements and cut-out/opening details from the Design Lead (Primary)
• Review primary drawings, design and sizing calculations, and obtain client approvals
• Prepare the protection, control, signalling and automation design philosophy and review the functional description
• Review vendor deliverables and define protection, control, signalling and interfacing philosophies
• Estimate and plan man-hours, review the BOQ and provide technical clarifications to the contracts team
• Coordinate with operations to share design specifications for approval and with other disciplines for inter-departmental checks
• Support the site execution team and check pre-award vendor evaluations against client technical specifications
• Inspect equipment from the finalised vendor after vendor validation

Required profile

• Overall knowledge of system studies, control and protection requirements, schedules, layouts and associated calculations
• Hands-on experience with design software
• Knowledge of national and international codes and standards
• Understanding of secondary engineering activities such as schemes, wiring diagrams, SCADA and control systems
• Detailed knowledge of substation equipment and layouts
• Ability to multitask and deliver several tasks on time

Required skills

• CT/VT sizing and battery sizing calculations
• AC/DC schematic drawings
• General awareness of MS Office; ETAP, PSCAD and CYMEGRID are desirable
