Principal Engineer – Software (C4/HMI) – Defence

About the role

EDGE is looking for an experienced Software Engineer with a strong focus on user‑interface design to join a multidisciplinary team developing a complex Defence Communications and Command & Control (C2) system. The role involves designing, developing, integrating and maintaining mission‑critical software components in a Java‑based, distributed environment.

Key responsibilities

• Produce UI product and system requirement specifications based on end‑user input and operational analysis.
• Develop product and system design concepts with a focus on usability.
• Create, evaluate and modify prototypes, operational scenarios and process maps.
• Contribute to software architecture, detailed design and integration activities across complex distributed systems.
• Produce and maintain software design artefacts and participate in technical reviews.
• Ensure software quality through automated unit tests, integration/system testing and peer reviews.

Required profile

• Degree in Software Engineering.
• Minimum 8 years of software development experience, preferably in communications, defence or mission‑critical distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in Java development.
• Experience analysing designs from a Human Factors / Human Systems Integration perspective.
• Experience with GIS frameworks such as LuciadLightspeed or NASA World Wind.
• Solid understanding of UML, modular design and object‑oriented principles.
