Principal Transport Planner – Lead Transport Planning Projects

About the role

The Principal Transport Planner will lead and deliver transport planning and traffic engineering studies for a variety of infrastructure, development, and master‑planning projects. This senior position requires strong technical expertise, project delivery experience, and the ability to coordinate with clients, authorities, and multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead transport planning and traffic engineering studies for development and infrastructure projects.
• Prepare and review Traffic Impact Studies, transport assessments, mobility studies, and traffic management assessments.
• Conduct traffic analysis, junction capacity assessments, network assessments, trip generation and distribution, mode‑share, parking demand and transport demand modelling.
• Support strategic and detailed transport modelling activities, including model input preparation, output review and result interpretation.
• Manage day‑to‑day technical activities, ensure compliance with design standards and authority requirements, and coordinate inputs from multidisciplinary teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics or a related discipline.
• Chartered status or professional membership with CIHT, TPS, ICE or equivalent.
• Typically 12+ years of experience in transport planning, scheme appraisal and business case development.
• Proven track record of delivering multi‑disciplinary transport projects in line with DfT and Treasury guidance.
• Strong commercial awareness, client relationship management and business development experience.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency with industry‑standard transport modelling software and tools.
• Analytical techniques for traffic analysis and network assessment.
• Experience in preparing technical reports, calculations and supporting documentation.
