R&D Technician - Mechanical (UAV Prototypes)

About the role

The R&D Technician - Mechanical builds, assembles, tests and maintains the mechanical systems of R&D prototypes such as UAV airframes, propulsion and fuel systems, mechanisms, launch systems and ground equipment. The technician works hands-on with mechanical engineers from the first prototype to flight test, and acts as the bridge between R&D and production by helping transfer designs into manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Assemble airframes, structures, mechanisms, propulsion parts and ground equipment from drawings and BOMs
• Bond parts with structural adhesives and do composite lay-up, vacuum bagging and repairs
• Install fasteners, mechanisms, control surfaces and propulsion components to specification
• Measure weight and centre of gravity, rig control surfaces, do leak tests and balance propellers
• Support structural, functional and vibration tests and ground runs and flight tests
• Maintain prototypes and ground equipment, keep prototype records and manage spare parts stock
• Build pilot production units, make jigs and work instructions, and train assembly staff
• Keep the workshop clean and safe, follow quality procedures and safety rules

Required profile

• Diploma, associate degree or technical certificate in mechanical, aeronautical, mechatronics or aircraft maintenance engineering
• At least 3 years of hands-on experience in mechanical assembly, composite work or aircraft maintenance; UAV, aerospace, defence, motorsport or marine composites experience preferred
• An aircraft maintenance licence or military aircraft maintenance experience is an advantage
• Experience in training others or writing work instructions is an advantage
• Good spoken and written English; must pass company security screening; a valid UAE driving licence is an advantage

Required skills

• Reading engineering drawings, BOMs and 3D models; basic GD&T
• Structural bonding, composite lay-up and repair, prepreg handling, curing in ovens or autoclaves
• Basic machining, torque tools and precision measuring tools
• CAD viewers, spreadsheets and MS Office; basic CAD (e.g. SolidWorks)
• Propeller balancing, small piston engines or gas turbines, launch and recovery systems
