Senior Charge Nurse – OPD Gastroenterology

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse for the OPD Gastroenterology unit supports the Nurse Manager in delivering high‑quality, 24/7 patient care. This position ensures efficient use of resources, promotes safe nursing practice, and contributes to budget management while fostering collaborative decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care needs in the gastro‑enterology outpatient department.
• Coordinate staffing levels and skill mix with the Nurse Manager to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Monitor staff performance, provide coaching, feedback and support throughout each shift.
• Manage utilization of human resources, consumables and equipment to optimize efficiency.
• Collaborate with pharmacy services to meet medication requirements for the unit.
• Respond to emergencies according to organizational policies and delegate tasks as needed.
• Facilitate communication between patients, families and the interdisciplinary health‑care team.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, family meetings and performance‑improvement projects.
• Identify learning needs, mentor new staff and assist with educational activities.

Required profile

• Demonstrated competence in patient assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation.
• Experience liaising with nursing leadership to align staffing with patient care demands.
• Ability to monitor and guide staff performance, providing constructive feedback.
• Strong understanding of resource management, including consumables and equipment.
• Proven capability to work collaboratively with pharmacy, medical teams and other health‑care providers.
• Preparedness to act in emergencies and support unit safety initiatives.
