Technician II - Thermal Insulation

About the role

EDGE, an advanced technology group headquartered in the UAE, is hiring a Technician II for thermal insulation in Abu Dhabi. The role covers applying, fabricating and inspecting thermal insulation systems across solid rocket motors, ensuring full coverage, bond integrity and dimensional conformance in line with approved process instructions and quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Apply rubber and elastomeric thermal insulation lay-ups to motor cases, end closures and nozzles, following approved ply sequences, coverage maps and thickness requirements.
• Prepare component surfaces for bonding: clean, abrade, mask and apply primer and adhesive systems to metal, composite and previously insulated substrates.
• Cut, shape and profile insulation stock using templates and patterns, forming butt joints, scarfs and overlaps without voids, air pockets or ply gaps.
• Operate curing equipment such as ovens, autoclaves, press-cure tooling and vacuum bagging systems, run approved cure cycles, monitor temperature and pressure and keep accurate cure records.
• Inspect cured insulation after curing: tap test bonded surfaces, measure thickness with calibrated gauges and check coverage completeness, documenting results on the manufacturing traveller.
• Fabricate rubber seals, end-cap inserts, gaskets and bespoke insulation profiles to drawing requirements, and help trial-fit and install pre-formed parts into motor hardware.
• Control receipt, storage and issue of uncured rubber and insulation materials within shelf-life limits and temperature requirements, and in line with hazardous materials handling procedures.
• Maintain the work area, lay-up tooling, mandrels and templates, and report tooling damage or equipment faults to the supervisor.
• Follow HSE requirements for chemical handling, including PPE for solvents and adhesives, ventilation controls and confined-space entry protocols, and report hazards and near-misses immediately.
• Support continuous improvement by reporting lay-up difficulties, recurring bond defects, material inconsistencies and tooling shortcomings to the supervisor or process engineer.

Required profile

• 1-3 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment; no prior insulation experience is required, as full structured on-the-job training is provided.
• Secondary school certificate or vocational qualification in manufacturing, materials processing or a related trade.
• English proficiency is required for all roles.

PREFERRED qualifications

• Prior exposure to rubber processing, composite lay-up, adhesive bonding or insulation work in aerospace, automotive or industrial manufacturing.
• Trade certificate or technician diploma in polymer processing, composite fabrication or a related discipline.
• Basic chemical handling awareness certification.
