Assistant Librarian

About the role

The Assistant Librarian will support the School Librarian in managing the school library on a daily basis. This entry‑level role is ideal for candidates with experience as a Teaching Assistant or Higher Level Teaching Assistant who wish to develop a career in a library environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the School Librarian with the organisation, issuing, returning and shelving of library resources.
• Help students and staff locate books and learning materials and support them during library lessons and independent study periods.
• Maintain accurate library records, label and catalogue resources, and conduct regular stock checks.
• Create attractive displays, promote new books, reading initiatives and school events.
• Support school‑wide literacy programmes, book fairs, author visits and other library‑related activities.
• Ensure the library remains a safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environment.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA), Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) or a similar school‑based support role is highly desirable.
• A genuine interest in books, reading, literacy and supporting young people.
• Strong organisational and communication abilities.
• Confidence working with students across different age groups.
• Basic IT proficiency and willingness to learn library management systems.
• Positive, proactive and collaborative attitude.
