Clinical Coder

About the role

The Clinical Coder is responsible for translating physicians' diagnoses and procedures into accurate International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes and CPT-4 procedure codes. Working within the hospital’s coding/abstracting system, the role ensures compliance with health‑insurance policies and supports billing and reimbursement processes.

Key responsibilities

• Encode all documented diagnoses and procedures using ICD‑9‑CM, ICD‑10 and CPT‑4 coding systems.
• Create abstracts of patient demographics, statistical and medical information and enter them into the coding system.
• Review electronic statements, EMR entries and claim forms for accuracy and assign appropriate codes.
• Apply health‑insurance policy terms, coverage, exclusions and approval requirements to ensure billed services match insurer authorizations.
• Query physicians when clarification is needed and resolve coding edits using the Dubai Coding Edit Engine (CEED).
• Estimate costs for self‑pay patients and ensure daily productivity targets are met.
• Close and dispatch insurance, corporate and self‑pay batches according to schedule.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in any field (medical background preferred).
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.
• 1–2 years of experience in ICD‑9‑CM or ICD‑10 coding within a claims‑handling environment.
• Knowledge of UAE health‑insurance policy terms and exclusions (preferred).
• Fluent English; Arabic communication skills preferred.
