Clinical Coder – Medical Coding Specialist

About the role

The Clinical Coder will join the coding team at American Hospital Dubai, translating physician documentation into accurate ICD and CPT codes. This role ensures that all diagnoses, procedures, and services are correctly captured for billing, compliance, and statistical reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Encode diagnoses and procedures using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) system.
• Create abstracts of patient demographics, medical information, and clinical details in the coding/abstracting system.
• Review electronic statements, EMR entries, and claim forms to assign appropriate codes.
• Apply CPT‑4 guidelines for principal and secondary procedures and verify billing accuracy.
• Track and confirm insurer or corporate approvals for services such as imaging, diagnostics, and surgeries.
• Investigate repeated services and seek medical necessity clarification from physicians.
• Utilize the Coding Edit Engine of Dubai (CEED) to address coding edits and add required ICD codes.
• Estimate costs for self‑pay patients and manage physician queries.
• Maintain daily productivity targets and ensure timely closure of insurance, corporate, and self‑pay batches.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of ICD coding standards and CPT‑4 procedure coding.
• Familiarity with health insurance policy terms, coverage, exclusions, and approval processes.
• Experience working with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems and coding software.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet productivity goals.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with physicians and insurance coordinators.
