Consultant Counsellor Psychosocial Support – Africa Region

About the role

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is seeking a Consultant Counsellor to provide psychosocial support to staff across the Africa region. The role is part of the Psychological Support Programme (PSP) within the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Unit, delivering confidential counselling and mental‑health services.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual counselling sessions on request, ensuring strict confidentiality.
• Conduct briefings, debriefings and critical incident debriefings for staff, both individually and in groups.
• Develop and maintain a confidential file‑management system in coordination with the OHSW unit.
• Deliver training, webinars or workshops on stress management and related topics.
• Contribute to PSP reporting, statistics and annual reporting while preserving client confidentiality.
• Participate in regular PSP virtual meetings and ensure timely upload of statistics.
• Support the development of guidelines and SOPs related to staff wellbeing.

Required profile

• University degree in Psychology or Psychotherapy with professional licensure; training in psycho‑traumatology or critical incident debriefing is preferred.
• Experience in psychological management of trauma or critical incidents, preferably in international humanitarian settings.
• Fluent spoken and written English; French is desirable.
• Ability to work in multi‑cultural, multi‑disciplinary teams and to travel on short notice to surrounding countries.
• Availability to provide support outside regular working hours when required.
