Lab Technician

About the role

This position supports science teachers and students by preparing and running laboratory practicals in a school setting. The lab technician keeps the laboratory clean, safe and well stocked, and helps run practical examinations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare laboratory equipment, chemicals, specimens and materials for science practical lessons, and set up and dismantle experiments before and after classes.
• Keep laboratories clean, organized and safe, and support teachers during lab sessions.
• Maintain, calibrate and repair basic faults in laboratory equipment; keep records of maintenance, chemical use and inventory.
• Manage inventory, order and store supplies, and label, store and dispose of chemicals and hazardous materials safely.
• Carry out routine safety inspections and ensure compliance with school health and safety policies.
• Prepare chemical solutions and specimens, and conduct lab practical examinations as per school protocols.
• Help develop and update laboratory procedures and safety documentation, and inspect emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations and first aid kits.
• Support school and examination activities as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Technology, Chemistry, Biology or Physics.
• Previous experience in a school, college, university or research laboratory is preferred.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and chemical handling procedures.
• Good record keeping and computer skills.
