Principal Engineer – System Engineer

About the role

EDGE is looking for a Principal Engineer (Embedded Software System Engineer) to lead the definition, architecture, and integration of high‑performance real‑time embedded software systems for defence and aerospace platforms. The role acts as the technical authority linking system requirements, software architecture, hardware interfaces, and development teams.

Key responsibilities

• Translate high‑level system requirements into detailed software requirements and maintain end‑to‑end traceability.
• Define software architectures, interface control documents, and integration strategies for real‑time embedded systems.
• Lead technical reviews, mentor junior engineers, and drive capability development.
• Act as liaison between software, systems, and hardware engineers and project stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronic, Computer, or Software Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 15 years of embedded software experience, preferably in defence, aerospace or aviation.
• At least 3 years in a software architect, system engineer or technical lead role.
• Experience certifying safety‑critical software to DO‑178C Level A or equivalent.

Required skills

• Embedded real‑time software development.
• Requirements management and traceability tools (e.g., Jama).
• Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), SCADE.
• Safety‑critical middleware, FPGA interfacing, and embedded communication protocols.
