Senior Charge Nurse – Nursing Operations

About the role

The Senior Charge Nurse – Nursing Operations supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing the day‑to‑day clinical and operational activities of the unit. Working 24/7, the role ensures high‑quality, safe and compassionate patient care while managing resources, staffing and the unit budget.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Nurse Manager in planning, coordinating and evaluating operational, fiscal and personnel activities.
• Allocate resources and monitor utilization of staff, consumables and equipment to promote efficient care.
• Ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix, providing coaching, feedback and performance monitoring.
• Collaborate with pharmacy, medical teams and interdisciplinary partners to support medication delivery and patient discharge planning.
• Lead emergency response, delegate tasks and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, family meetings and performance‑improvement projects.
• Identify learning needs, mentor new staff and support ongoing education in conjunction with the Clinical Resource Nurse.
• Monitor patient outcomes and drive system improvements to enhance safety and quality.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with demonstrated competence in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
• Experience in charge‑nurse or supervisory roles within a hospital setting.
• Ability to manage staffing, budgets and resources effectively.
• Strong communication skills for interaction with patients, families and interdisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to continuous quality improvement and staff development.
