Assistant/Associate Professor – Urban Planning & Design

About the role

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah seeks a full‑time assistant or associate professor to lead advanced studio courses in urban planning, urban design and landscape architecture. The successful candidate will blend creative studio teaching with cutting‑edge digital and AI‑driven design methodologies.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses and studio labs in urban planning, urban design, landscape architecture and core architectural design.
• Integrate digital and AI tools such as GIS analysis, generative design, real‑time simulation platforms (e.g., Autodesk Spacemaker, UrbanForm Labs, CityEngine) and predictive modeling engines into studio workflows.
• Guide students through scenario planning, computational urban morphologies and interactive visualisation techniques.
• Supervise and mentor students across design and theoretical courses.
• Develop and innovate curriculum aligned with NAAB accreditation standards.
• Maintain an active research agenda and a strong portfolio of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrate professional practice through built projects, competition entries or consultancy work.
• Participate in departmental, university and community service activities, including accreditation and continuous improvement efforts.

Required profile

• PhD in Urban Planning, Urban Design or Landscape Architecture from a recognised university.
• Strong professional portfolio showcasing creative and built work.
• Proven experience teaching studio and theoretical courses in architecture‑related fields.
• Familiarity with NAAB accreditation processes and standards.
• Robust research record with peer‑reviewed publications.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
• Evidence of service contributions at departmental, university or community levels.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, GIS and Adobe Suite.
• Experience with digital and AI design tools such as Autodesk Spacemaker, UrbanForm Labs and CityEngine.
