About the role
The Senior Charge Nurse leads the nursing team within a hospital ward, ensuring optimal bed allocation, appropriate staff skill mix, and seamless coordination of services during each shift. This senior position drives patient‑centered care, quality documentation, and continuous improvement across the unit.
Key responsibilities
- Provide leadership for the nursing team and report issues to senior management.
- Collaborate with non‑nursing departments to resolve issues affecting patient care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary committees, sometimes chairing or co‑chairing them.
- Facilitate effective patient flow by aligning bed capacity with staffing resources.
- Monitor staff skill mix against patient acuity and adjust workload accordingly.
- Promote continuity of care focused on discharge planning and outcome orientation.
- Maintain high standards of nursing documentation per organisational policy.
- Conduct hospital rounds to identify problems, propose solutions, and guide clinical operations.
- Liaise with internal and external healthcare providers while safeguarding patient confidentiality.
- Utilise information technology for data access, transmission, and reporting.
- Support performance‑improvement culture, monitor quality of care, and participate in accreditation activities.
- Audit compliance with documentation standards and implement evidence‑based practices.
- Track key performance and clinical indicators, driving corrective actions as needed.
- Coordinate, monitor, and report after‑hours incidents, ensuring preventive actions.
- Minimise infection and cross‑infection risks for patients, staff, and visitors.
Required profile
- Extensive experience in nursing leadership within a hospital setting.
- Ability to manage staff skill mix and patient acuity effectively.
- Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of hospital policies, infection control, and incident management.
- Proven capability to conduct rounds, drive quality improvement, and support accreditation processes.
